Fund savers invested in equity funds in January

[2012-02-10] The total net savings in funds during January amounted to SEK 1.6 billion. Fund investors made net purchases of equity funds for SEK 13.9 billion, while redemptions of fixed income funds were SEK 11.3 billion. The upturn in equity markets helped to rise in fund assets to about SEK 1900 billion at the end of January.

Net sales during the month of January went to equity funds, while fixed income funds showed net withdrawals. Net sales in equity funds were distributed over most investment categories, while withdrawals from fixed income funds mainly came from money market funds, SEK 7.6 billion. Withdrawals from bond funds amounted to SEK 3.7 billion.

"After a dismal 2011 equity markets turned up again in January, and so did savings in equity funds too," says Pia Nilsson managing director at SIFA. Economic development is still uncertain in many parts of the world, especially in Europe, but it looks brighter now than last fall. It is nevertheless appropriate to point out, after the sharp rise in equity markets in January, that savings in equity funds should be seen in the long run. "

Of the total net savings in investment funds, SEK 13.9 billion, most went to Sweden Funds, SEK 3 billion, and funds investing in emerging markets (other markets) SEK 3 billion. North America and Asia funds showed relatively high net savings, SEK 1.7 and 1.5 billion, while Sweden / Global Funds was the only fund type that showed slight net withdrawals. It is notable that a large proportion, SEK 5.8 billion of net savings in equity funds went into index funds.
